Ever put on your jeans and a top and feel like the outfit needs something? Before you start changing everything…..try a jacket.
Jackets give your outfit a little lift: a new shape, a different texture, or a color that makes those familiar pieces feel fresh. So, keep your favorite basics (that fit well and are comfortable) and invest in a few jackets to pair with them. You’ll see your basics in a whole new light and immediately upgrade your look!
Start with the outfit you already wear - a lot.
Choose jeans that you feel good in and a top that sits comfortably underneath a jacket (nothing too bulky) Then try your jacket options over that same base. You’ll see much more clearly what each one brings to the outfit - cool color, a unique shape or even an interesting collar.
For lunch with friends, try a patterned jacket over a plain top and cropped wide leg jeans so that outer layer is the show-stopper.. For a casual dinner, try a more structured shape with dark denim and a simple shoe. Remember that when you are out for lunch or dinner (or a special event) you’ll probably take the jacket off, so wearing a “plain” top underneath is perfectly fine. Just make sure it’s in tip top shape.
Look at where the jacket ends in relation to the jeans’ waistband. If you are wearing high-waisted jeans, then a cropped jacket will work perfectly. When wearing a slim pair of pants, opt for a more oversized jacket to offset the narrow bottom. Check the sleeves and shoulders: you should be able to move comfortably while wearing the jacket. Focus on a sleeveless top or a shirt with long slim arms to wear underneath. Don’t try to smoosh a puff sleeve or heavy material under a slim jacket. Wear those tops with a more roomy jacket.
Before adding a jacket to your cart, ask: Where Are You Going In That? Lunch, a casual workday, dinner with friends—give it an actual place in your life - even if you are staying home!
Then try the jacket with items that you already own - things you reach for often based on their shape and comfort level. . Try a turtleneck or a long sleeve t-shirt or even a thin knit. Try a cool neckline like this or this. A jacket on a hanger NEVER looks as good as it does when paired with pieces that make it look super special.
