Straight jeans or “mom jeans” or whatever you want to call them are back. They are the EXACT same thing that everyone wore in the 80’s and 90’s. Yikes!
Generally speaking, straight jeans are more laid back and roomy than a pair of skinnies. If you are tired of wearing tight, skinny jeans, then you may just want to try these! (Just to clarify, skinnies are not OUT if they look good on you.).
Straight jeans are just what they sound like – straight. They don’t flare or taper at all. They give a little more room at the knee and the ankle. Straight jeans tend to have a higher waist which is GOOD for ladies of a certain age :). Frankly, I would suggest wearing a darker shade in a straight jean – at least with your first pair. They take some getting used to, so start with a wash that makes you feel slimmer.
With straight jeans, you HAVE to make sure that they hit you at the right spot – the ankle. When you are choosing a shoe, remember a few things…
1) Showing a little skin with a flat or loafer is a GREAT idea – that will REALLY slim your leg
2) Sneakers should not come up too high on the instep (not too close to the ankle) – that shortens the foot and leg.
3) Sandals – yes! You can absolutely wear sandals. Just take a look in the mirror and see if the style of sandals flatters your leg 🙂
4) Booties need to have a very SLIM SHAFT that fits UNDER the jeans. You should not let the hem of the pants fall on top of the bootie – that is a no no. Absolutely do NOT tuck a straight jean into a bootie!! Talk about an 80’s look – LOL
5) Like with most jeans styles, heels – high or low – will help to elongate the leg. You don’t have to go really HIGH, but a little something will flatter how you look in straight jeans.
Anyhoo, I know I look like my mom in my straight jeans and I really don’t care 🙂 She wears them VERY well….even today! On the other hand, I can picture myself with my perm, big leather belt and a turtleneck tucked in. HAHAHAHAH. OMG. That was a terrible look back then…and I mean the perm!
